CALAVERAS CHRYSOTILE ASBESTOS
Calaveras Asbestos, Ltd. (“Calaveras”) was formed in October, 1975 for the purpose of mining and milling chrysotile asbestos fiber from an asbestos mine located in Copperopolis, California. Calaveras acquired the mine from H.K. Porter in October, 1975.
Calaveras mined and milled chrysotile asbestos fiber from the mine between approximately November, 1975 and December, 1987. Sales of this asbestos fiber were made by Calaveras to consumers between approximately December, 1975 and January, 1988. The asbestos fiber was sold under the name “Calaveras Asbestos, Ltd.”
Chrysotile asbestos is a serpentine mineral with flexible, long fibers that are known to be highly heat and fire resistant. Despite controversy over whether amphibole fibers stay longer in the lungs longer and are more toxic than chrysotile, all types of asbestos, are known carcinogens whose fibers create genetic damage that lead to cancers. The most common form of asbestos found on earth and also in construction and industrial products in the United States is chrysotile.
Customers for the asbestos fiber supplied by Calaveras from the mill included Abex Industries, CAPCO, Celotex, Certainteed, Chevron, Dana Corp., Flintkote, GAF, General Motors, Gold Bond, Johns-Manville, Special Materials and W.W. Henry Co. The asbestos fiber was incorporated into various products manufactured, sold and distributed by these, and other companies.
The handling, cutting, removal, installation or other disturbance of products containing asbestos fiber supplied by Calaveras cause the release, discharge and emission of unsafe levels of respirable asbestos fiber and dust into the breathing zone of the worker. Such release causes contamination of the work place with hazardous levels of asbestos, which can cause asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.
