Memphis Utilities Division to Train Workers in Asbestos Removal
Memphis Light, Gas and Water has suspended all repairs and routine work until employees can be trained on how to properly handle asbestos that has been discovered in the coating of some old underground gas pipes.
Asbestos is a fire-proof and insulating mineral that was used as a coating on gas pipes between 1950 and 1989. The asbestos cement coating from the gas and water mains can then decay or can become disturbed during repairs or removal. When asbestos is disturbed, it can become airborne. If inhaled, asbestos can cause many serious diseases, including mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a cancer that begins in the lining of the heart, lung or abdominal cavities decades after initial exposure. Symptoms of the disease are hard to properly identify and often the cancer has advanced to late stages before discovery. To date, there is no cure for mesothelioma and life expectancy after diagnosis is often less than a year.
To protect workers from the harmful effects of exposure to asbestos, MLGW is having all of its employees go through a two day training to learn how to safely repair, remove and dispose of any asbestos containing materials and pipes.
If you or someone you know suspects they have been exposed to asbestos and are showing signs of mesothelioma or other lung related illness, please consult your doctor immediately. You may also call toll free 1-800-440-4262 to speak with an experienced mesothelioma attorney who specializes in asbestos lawsuits to explore any avenues of compensation to help pay for treatment costs.
