Two top research facilities have come together to research the different genetic and environmental factors that make some people more susceptible to developing mesothelioma than others.  FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital Chest Center of the Carolinas and Wake Forest School of Medicine are inviting anyone diagnosed with mesothelioma to participate in a clinical trial to help further the knowledge about this fatal illness.

Asbestos is now a known carcinogenic fibrous mineral that causes an incurable disease caused mesothelioma.  Before 1980, asbestos was used in many industrial, commercial and construction products.  Those who worked in shipyards, mining, milling, fireproofing, construction, mechanics and other related industries before 1980 were most likely exposed to asbestos and run the risk of developing an asbestos related disease.

Higher levels of exposure increase risk of development of mesothelioma however Dr. Ohar, the principal investigator of this current study, also believes that genetic factors are also involved.  Ohar has been researching occupational related cancers for over two decades.
