Search for Treatment and Cure for Mesothelioma
The incidence of mesothelioma continues to rise through out the world. Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that forms in the lining of the lungs, heart and abdomen. The primary risk factor for mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Despite this known and scientifically proven fact, the use of asbestos still continues in developing countries, without any warnings given or protective measures taken.
For years now, research has been conducted in search of better treatments or a cure for mesothelioma. Standard treatment approaches now combine different therapies. The most common and effective strategy to date is to combine surgery with adjuvant therapies, such as chemotherapy or radiation. For more information, read our article called Multimodality Treatments for Mesothelioma that synthesizes 30 years of data in a study to point to most beneficial therapy combinations to date.
Despite all the research, prognosis is still usually less than a year from time of diagnosis and treatments are only supportive in symptom and pain relief, not curative. Further research is needed to find ways to extend survival times, improve treatment methods, discover better diagnostic tools, and find ways to prevent mesothelioma from recurring after initial treatments.
If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, we urge you to look into participating in studies that are researching treatments. Your participation could help lead to valuable insights as well as a cure. Ask your treating physician about current clinical trials available to you.
