Nursing Home Beautician Receives Asbestos-Related Settlement
October 3rd, 2008 watermanA former beautician at a Florida nursing home has received $100,000 in a lawsuit filed in a wrongful firing lawsuit. Mary Ann Gruzs complained to the York County Pleasant Acres Nursing and Rehabilitation Center that tiles in the salon where she worked were discolored and breaking. She suspected they contained toxic amounts of asbestos and asked her employers to replace them and repair the damage.
Eventually the repairs were made; however, Gruzs claimed that workers made no effort to provide protection during the demolition and repair. Her requested air quality test was denied. An independent lab confirmed that dangerous amounts of asbestos were in both the floor tiles and the adhesive used to install them. Gruzs was later fired and she claimed in her suit against York County that it was due to her speaking out.
Mesothelioma attorneys are well aware of the dangers of inhaling asbestos fibers, which are odorless, tasteless and cannot be detected with the naked eye. People who work or live in areas where old floor or ceiling tiles are prevalent should take precautions to ensure a healthful environment.
